Draft #2

Teacher-

Martha-

Mr. O’Hannigan-

Jeremy-

Mrs. Fitzgibbons-

Rachel-

Dr. Handdoctor

Teacher: Alrighty everyone! Welcome to career day, thank you to all the wonderful parents for taking the time to come in today, we are so excited to hear about all of your fantastic jobs! All right who wants to go first.

Everyone raises hands excitedly

Teacher: Alrighty, Martha why don’t you bring your parent up first.

Martha: Awesome! Today I brought in my dad! He has the greatest job in the world.

Martha brings her dad to the front of the class and returns to her seat

Mr. O’Hannigan: Hello kids, my name is Mr. O'Hannigan and I’m a beekeeper.

Class oohs and ahhs

Mr. O’ Hannigan: Yes it’s a very exciting and fulfilling career path, I love it a lot and I’m happy to answer any questions you guys have about beekeeping or harvesting honey. In fact, I brought honey sticks for the whole class.

Class cheers

Teacher: Thank you so much Mr. O’Hannigan! That’s very kind of you. Ok, since we’re actually running a little short on time, we’re going to just have each of you introduce your parent and then we’ll do questions for our entire parent panel. Jeremy, do you want to introduce your mom next?

Jeremy: I sure would! My mom has just about the coolest job on the planet!

Jeremy brings his mom up next to mr. O’Hannigan and returns to his seat

Mrs. Fitzgibbons: Hi kids, my name is Mrs. Fitzgibbons and, well, this is kind of unexpected, but I’m also a beekeeper, and well... I also brought everyone honey sticks.

Class cheers again, unfazed by the multitude of beekeepers and honey sticks.

Teacher: (slightly less oblivious to the awkward nature of so many beekeepers) Oh wow! What are the odds? Two beekeepers. Ok Rachel, can you please introduce your dad, our final career day guest, to the class?

Rachel: I would love to. This is my dad, and he has a very impressive job.

Rachel brings dad to front of the room and returns to her seat

Dr. Handdoctor: Hello kids! My name is Dr. Handdoctor--

Teacher: Wow! You must be a hand doctor! What a perfect name for the job.

Dr. Handdoctor: What? No. I’m a beekeeper.

Teacher: (exasperated) no way.

Dr. Handdoctor: (nervous laugh) Yep, I know my name may not show it, but I actually decided to get my PhD in BeeKeeping

Mr. O’Hannigan: A noble pursuit

Dr. Handdoctor: Thank you. I don’t know if I’ve ever been in a room with this many beekeepers since grad school

All the beekeepers laugh in unison, the students don’t understand, but love the beekeepers

Teacher: Uhh, well I don’t know how helpful this panel is going to be seeing that you’re all the same profession. I had the students write out questions ahead of time, so I guess kids, just try to read questions that are pertinent to beekeeping

Martha: All my questions are about beekeeping

Teacher: What?

Rachel: Mine too.

Teacher: You guys were supposed to research different types of jobs and write a wide range of questions

Jeremy: Sorry! Just bees.

Mrs. Fitzgibbons: Fire away kids!

Martha: What is the best part about keeping bees?

All beekeepers in unison: The honey! (all chuckle)

Kids clap

Jeremy: Where do you keep the bees?

Beekeepers: I keep them in what is called an apiary or a “bee yard”.

Kids oo aahh

Teacher: What? How is this new information to you? All your parents are beekeepers!!

Rachel: What’s the worst part of being a beekeeper

Beekeepers: The bee stings! Hahaha, just kidding, actually the more you get stung the less it hurts, also we wear protective gear and veils and use smokers around the hives that calms the bees. Perhaps that’s my least favorite part of the job, at times, one can’t help but feel like they’re taking advantage and imprisoning these bees.

Kids nod heads in unison and agreement

Teacher: Well, we were supposed to learn about a greater variety of jobs today, but I guess if you all found this helpful then I did my job.

Jeremy: Well Miss. Langford, it kind of seems like you don’t really like your job.

Teacher: What? No, I’m very happy with my career!

Rachel: Are you sure Miss. Langford? Don’t you want a job with a little more excitement, a little more danger, something that really makes your heart pound.

Teacher: What? No. What are you implying?

Martha: I think you know what we’re implying Miss. Langford, you need a little more honey in your life. Maybe it’s time for a change.

Teacher: Oh my god are you guys really telling me that I should become a--

All students/parents in unison: BEEKEEPER!!
